Usage rights

Usage rights say where, how and for how long a brand may use a photo, video or piece of music. They come from the author, a licence or a stock agreement.

A photo can be yours to post on Instagram but not in an ad, or yours for a year but not after. Using it outside those terms can mean a takedown, a fine or an unhappy photographer.

Keep the rights next to the file: who made it, what was agreed and until when. Then nobody has to search old emails before a post goes out.

Example

A photographer's shoot for a restaurant is licensed for organic posts for 12 months, but not for paid ads.
